Chiloe, the seaside culture

Ideal for those who like to go relaxed, this program will give you the chance to know and tour the places known for their peace and quiet. You’ll see in a humane scale how nature and man coexist.

ITINERARY
• Day 1 Puerto Montt - Ancud
• Day 2 Ahui Fort – Quetalmahue – Penguin’s nesting grounds or Caulin’s Bay
• Day 3 Ancud - Castro
• Day 4 Day off
• Day 5 Chonchi - National Park
• Day 6 Day off
• Day 7 Castro – Puerto Montt’s airport

Day 1 Puerto Montt - Ancud
Reception at the airport and transfer to the city of Puerto Montt, to then board the regular itinerary bus to Ancud. Reception and transfer to the chosen hotel. By the afternoon, we’ll tour along the city, getting to know the San Antonio Spanish Fort, the Arena Gruesa beach, Cerro Huaihuén viewpoint, and then we visit the market and the artisans fair; the fishermen docks and finally the Regional Museum, appreciating an interesting sample of culture, history and traditions in Chiloe. We return then to the hotel.

Day 2 Ahui Fort – Quetalmahue – Penguin’s nesting grounds or Caulin’s Bay
We leave early in the morning to make a tour bordering Ancud’s bay passing by Lechahua beach getting to Quilo Bridge, where we’ll visit the archaeological museum made by the locals. We continue to Ahui Fort, a Spanish fortification built in 1779, from where you’ll have a panoramic view of Ancud’s entire bay. This fortification has 14 cannons, a powder house and a jail. Back to Ancud and lunch.
 
Between April and August 
By the afternoon we’ll head by the coast to Caulin’s bay, a place that presents us a habitat rich in avifauna such as the black-necked swan and Chilean flamingo. The tour contemplates a visit to the Mythology museum and the “Senda Darwin” biological station; these two are a discovery for all.

 
Between September and March 
By the afternoon we visit Puñihuil Beach, a paradise for wild life where Magellan and Humboldt penguins coexist next to sea otters and seagulls in two islets that we’ll get to see after a brief navigation. Return to the hotel.


Day 3 Ancud - Castro
Leaving early from the hotel, we’ll travel to the fishermen cove of Dalcahue, to visit one of three World Heritage churches you’ll get to see today. Then we cross by ferry to Quinchao Island to introduce ourselves by seaside roads of this attractive island and visit the towns of Curaco de Velez and Achao, where the black-necked swans stand out, next to ancient constructions and Achao's church, the oldest in the whole archipelago. Arrive to Castro and accommodation at the hotel. By the afternoon, we’ll tour along the city including visits to the Palafitos (houses built above the sea), the Modern Art Museum, Ten-Ten’s peninsula, San Francisco’s church and finally the artisans market. Return to the hotel.

Day 4 Day off
This day is an opportunity to discover all the interesting places in the city. Bookstores, clothing stores cafes, pubs and restaurants. As an additional activity we recommend horseback riding in Chiloe or a Golf afternoon.

Day 5 Chonchi - National Park
Leaving towards South, you’ll participate in an excursion day visiting Chonchi, and the World Heritage churches of Nercon and Chonchi. We continue though a fast road, bordering the Huillinco and Cucao lakes, which towns have the house cemetery, and we will visit. The visit to the National Park includes a visit to the Visitors Centre and an attractive walk along the “El Tepual” trail, where you’ll have the opportunity to appreciate the typical woods of Chiloe. Lunch, by the passengers and finally a meeting with the Pacific Ocean and a walk along its beach, to be returning to Castro by the afternoon.

Day 6 Day off
We can suggest you to go to Quellon by bus or car, or you can visit Tocoihue’s waterfall, Tenaun’s fishermen cove with a possibility to navigate to Mechuque. Finally a visit to Quemchi, where the famous writer Francisco Coloane was born.

Day 7 Castro – Puerto Montt’s airport
At the convened time, transfer from the hotel to Castro’s bus terminal, on time to get the bus to Puerto Montt. Reception at the bus terminal and transfer to Puerto Montt’s airport for your flight.
